Documentation
"Originale," meaning "odd people", is a music theatre piece by the German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. The composer, who was also the stage director of the premiere performance in 1961 in Cologne, was to inspire various artists to perform their original actions freely and extemporaneously. A wide range of characters are introduced and Nam June Paik played the role of an "action composer". According to Arthus C. Caspari who had offered a detailed criticism of "Originale", stated that only Paik and David Tudor were able to free themselves from the fixed scores and adapted themselves to playing with an accidental, uncertain drama, or the happening-like state.
